Letter of Recommendation for Matt Kaun
I am delighted to recommend Matt Kaun as a teacher in your school. I have worked with Mr. Kaun for two years, as secondary principal at the Rabat American School. Our school has 350 students pre-K through grade twelve. We are a diverse school. Nearly half of the students are Moroccan, about 20% are from the United States, and the remaining students represent forty countries. English is the language of instruction. Due to the number of second language students, our school has a substantial English support program. We are an IB school with most of our upper-level classes taught with the IB curriculum.
Mr. Kaun currently teaches Geometry, Algebra 2, and IB SL Math Studies. He is one of the finest mathematics teachers I have observed in my long career as a school administrator. Whether a student is performing at the lowest level or the highest level of mathematics, Mr. Kaun ensures that each student can be successful. Mr. Kaun has high expectations for students, which motivates them to do their very best work. He encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning. Students enjoy coming to his classroom and have told me that in Mr. Kaun’s class, they feel welcomed and valued by the teacher and that they can really learn math from him.
In addition, Mr. Kaun is chairman of our mathematics department. Under his leadership, he has created wide interest and participation in our student math teams and has taken them to European competition. He is an advisor for the ninth grade, has organized leadership retreats for the students, and supported them in their activities. He has played a key leadership role in our accreditation process, chaired academic and strategic plan committees, and supported our student activity program.
Matt is not only a great math teacher, but a valuable asset in all aspects of the school. He is intelligent, visionary, responsible, creative, a true team member, and has a great sense of humor. I appreciate his positive attitude, his commitment to students, his work ethic, and his willingness to always help out when needed. You will not find a better person to have on your faculty than Matt Kaun.
Sincerely,
Lois V. T. Bishop, Ed. D.,
Secondary Principal Rabat American School

To Whom It May Concern
Re: Matt Kaun
I have worked with Matt Kaun, and his spouse Catherine Calcutt-Kaun for two school years (06-07 and 07-08). Matt and Catherine had taught at RAS for four years through the 04-05 year, and agreed to return when the school had a late and unexpected vacancy late in the 05-06 year. I had not hired them originally, and did not know them, but they came highly recommended. Shortly after they returned to the school, I realized that asking them back was one of the best hiring decisions I’d made in my career. Simply put, they are a class act.
Matt teaches a range of math classes, including IB Math Studies. His lessons are well prepared, and he is competent at helping students with a wide range of abilities in each class. His nature is positive, approachable and encouraging. Students relate well to him and feel comfortable asking for additional assistance when needed during class or outside of class time.
Not only does Matt put forth his best effort within the class, he carries that over to “the entire life of the school”. He took on the role of Chair of the Math Department, works with the Board Finance and Salaries and Benefits Committees as a faculty representative, and is ever present at school activities. When RAS recently hosted the regional volleyball tournament, Matt willing took on the difficult task of arranging home-stays for almost 100 athletes, helped with scoring, and was around during the entire tournament to lend a hand where needed. No less involved or visible is his wife, Catherine.
Overall, I am extremely impressed with the professionalism of the Kauns, coupled with a very positive, caring and rational outlook and demeanor. I cannot speak highly enough of them, and feel they will leave a rather large void in our community should they go elsewhere. We are fortunate to have had them as community members for six years, and know they will be an outstanding additional to their next school community. They are among a small handful of educators for whom I give my unqualified recommendation.

Letter of Reference for Matt Kaun
Since August 2002, I have served as the Director of the Rabat American School (RAS). During that time, Matt Kaun has served as a secondary math teacher in our school. I am honored to write a letter of recommendation for him.
As Director of the school, I do not spend as much time in classrooms as I should. Principals are much more qualified to address the pedagogical strengths of each of our teachers. In the case of Mr. Kaun, however, I can attest to the fact that he is much admired by students, parents, and staff. He is generally recognized as one of our superior teachers. Matt is one of those stellar performers that every school wants to have on its staff. One of his colleagues recently made the statement that Matt truly exemplifies the values of the National Honor Society for which he has capably served as an advisor. Matt is, in every sense of the word, a very highly qualified individual and an excellent teacher.
In his four years at RAS, Matt has provided outstanding leadership for NHS and for a number of other activities in our school. He has introduced the junior and senior math competitions for our “mathletes” and was the driving force that lead to our school hosting the senior math competition in Rabat in 2004. Among his many activities at RAS, one can include:
National Honor Society Advisor 2002-2005
Math Department Coordinator 2002-2005
School Measurement Committee 2003-2004
ISMTF Senior Math Competition 2004 Coordinator
Volunteer at swim meets, basketball tournaments, dances, concerts, etc.
I would be remiss if I failed to mention that Matt has been the trip leader for our annual grade 9 ascent of Mount Toubkal. This is done early in the school year as an activity to bring the new high school students together as a group. It is a four day hike culminating in the ascent to the top of Mount Toubkal - at a height of over 4,000 meters. Matt has lead this trip since 2002. Those who have accompanied him on this trip, speak glowingly of his calm and confident manner, his knowledge of what to do in given situations, his ability to cajole students to do something they would normally not do, and to feel okay if they are not able to make the complete ascent. Matt’s abilities have made this trip one of the highlights of the school year.
It is obvious that Mr. Kaun has been an active and committed member of our RAS faculty. In addition, Matt is an integral member of our community. He is the type of person who is popular with colleagues and helps to make our school have a genuine sense of camaraderie. He and his wife, Catherine, frequently open their home to the entire staff for a Thanksgiving celebration or a sundowner to celebrate key dates in a school year. Even on the eve of their final departure from Rabat, they have invited all the staff to their home to celebrate the last work day of the 2004-2005 school year. They have also helped to organize bicycle trips and golf weekends.
Matt Kaun has my highest possible recommendation. Not only is he a superb teacher in a subject for which it is hard to find qualified teachers, he is also an integral part of the school community. He contributes positively in numerous ways. In fact, he contributes much more than his fair share. Any school will be most fortunate to have him as a member of its staff. I would relish the opportunity to be able to work with him again. If you have the opportunity to hire Matt Kaun, do not hesitate to do so. You will be adding an exemplary teacher and and exemplary individual to your staff.

Steve Kehm's Recommendation Letter - Matt
[Signed hard-copy on The American Community School of Abu Dhabi letterhead.]
April 2, 2000
To Whom It May Concern,
It is my pleasure to write this recommendation for Matt Kaun. Mr. Kaun is a highly respected member of the faculty of the American Community School of Abu Dhabi. During his time at ACS Mr. Kaun has taught mathematics at the middle and high school levels. His teaching of Algebra, Geometry, Pre Calculus, Calculus, and AP Calculus is exemplary.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mr. Kaun contributes his time and talents to the school in a consistent manner through his involvement in a variety of activities. He is a valuable member of the High School Faculty Board. He coached the academic games and forensic teams to very successful seasons. He serves at sporting events as a referee, score keeper, or timer, and volunteers at our three major school-wide events; the Holiday Bazaar, Fall Carnival, and Spring Fair. Mr. Kaun chaperones at high school dances and game nights and serves as an advisor to the junior class. This year he was an integral part of our senior trip, a four day community service project in the Eastern Emirates. In all activities with which he is involved, Mr. Kaun displays a positive attitude and keen insight.
One of the most obvious observations one makes in Mr. Kaun’s classes is that students are actively engaged in their learning. Students respond positively to his instruction and demonstrate considerable growth in their knowledge of content, as well as becoming independent learners, effective problems solvers, collaborative workers, and coherent communicators. He matches his instructional methods and materials to the developmental stages of his students and is adept at motivating them by reinforcing their efforts and progress. Mr. Kaun effectively integrates the use of technology into the learning environment. He is able to convey his compassion and concern for his students. As a result, he has established a good working relationship with his students and teaching colleagues. He takes pride in doing an exceptional job and demonstrates flexibility.
I highly recommend Mr. Kaun for an middle or secondary math position. He has had a very positive impact on our students, parents, and faculty at ACS.
Sincerely,
Stephen Kehm

Dr. David Cramer's Recommendation Letter - Matt

May 21, 2000
Letter of Reference for Matt Kaun
Matt Kaun has taught at the American Community School of Abu Dhabi since August, 1994. During this time he has been employed as a Secondary Math teacher.
The American Community School of Abu Dhabi is a K-12 private school which is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. There are 280 students in the Elementary School and 340 in the Middle and High School and they represent 40 different countries. The curriculum is basically an American type and the entire school program is taught in English.
Matt is an experienced teacher and has done an excellent job teaching Math to our students. He has taught all levels of math from grade 7 to AP Calculus. Currently he is teaching Algebra 2, Pre-calculus, Calculus, and AP Calculus. He always tries to use the latest techniques and is abreast of what is happening in his field. Students like to be in his class and respect him as a person as well as a good teacher. He has the ability to work with students at all ability levels and always tries to make students comfortable with math. Matt’s most outstanding attribute is his ability to work with students. He is one of those, all too rare, math teachers who can really relate to kids.
As well as being a solid teacher, able to operate on his own, Matt is a team player. He gets along well with students, staff, parents, and the administration. He contributes outside of the classroom as well. He has coached JV boys soccer, JV academic games, and Varsity Forensics. He has volunteered to chaperone dances and field trips. He has been a member of the Strategic Plan building committee, the high school faculty council, and the National Honor Society council. Matt is always available to help whenever needed.
Matt is competent, dependable, and well-liked. He is a veteran overseas teacher and would have no problem adapting to any environment in which he might find himself. If the opportunity presents itself in the future for Matt to work for me again, I would hire him without reservation.
Sincerely,
Dr. David P. Cramer
Superintendent, American Community School of Abu Dhabi.

John Hackworth's Recommendation Letter - Matt
[Signed hard-copy on Sayre School letterhead.]
October 11, 2000
To Whom It May Concern,
As Matt Kaun’s principal for five years at the American Community School in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, I feel well qualified to provide this recommendation. Matt first came to ACS as a middle school teacher for the 1994-95 school year. He taught 7th grade math, pre-Algebra, and Algebra I that year as well as the next. Matt came to ACS as a fairly inexperienced teacher. As is normal for very bright, energetic, and capable teachers, Matt’s learning curve was steep, and he became a better teacher as each month passed. He made adjustments in his teaching style to accommodate the middle school mentality, and it wasn’t long until his “Math Zone” was the place to hang out for cool middle schoolers.
However, when a position became available in the high school to teach Algebra I and II and Geometry, Matt was eager to give this a try. He enjoyed a very positive relationship with the head of the math department who became his mentor. While Matt learned many things from Mr. Kranz, he still kept his own special ways of doing things which were often modifications of things that he had found to be particularly effective at the middle school level. In my evaluation remarks to Matt at the end of his first year in the high school, I said the following, “How fortunate for the High School that you were eager and willing to move from the Middle School into a High School math position. Any program is only as good as its teachers, and the strength of our math program is an indication of not only your level of expertise, but your positive attitude and genuine concern for students. It is that genuineness that in the end creates the strongest atmosphere for learning. Your concern is evident not only to me, but also to your students. A wise teachers once said to me, ‘A student doesn’t care what you know until they know that you care.’ Your willingness to work with students before school, during lunch, and after school, as well as in class, tells students that you care.”
Matt’s daily quizzes and his willingness to work with students who were “not getting it” throughout the day as well as after school are factors that make him such an excellent teacher. There was never any doubt that Matt had the success of his students foremost in his approach as he presented lessons and followed through with additional help.
Outside the classroom when we could keep matt from bicycling 20 or 30 miles a day, he did an excellent job as the Junior Varsity Academic Games sponsor. He did this for all the years he worked with me, and he had many very successful teams. Matt also assisted with the forensics program as the school developed this opportunity for interested students. Matt’s willingness to assist in the forensics program is very telling of his enthusiasm and eagerness to help. He had little knowledge of forensics, but he was eager to see that our students had this opportunity, so he volunteered to assume responsibility for a portion of the program.
In summary, I have had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Kaun develop into a superior teacher. If given the opportunity, I would hire Matt more quickly than any other math teacher with whom I have ever worked. He will contribute the combination of high academic standards and enthusiasm to any faculty and math department. I can recommend Matt Kaun without any reservations.
Sincerely,
John W. Hackworth

Letter of Recommendation for Matt Kaun
To Whom It May Concern,
I am fortunate to have the opportunity to write a letter of recommendation on behalf of Matt Kaun, who is currently employed at the American Community School of Abu Dhabi (ACS), in the United Arab Emirates. ACS is a major international school serving the expatriate community of Abu Dhabi, and is a school that enjoys a tremendous reputation, both locally and internationally. Since working with Matt at ACS for the past four years, he has taught seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade math.
It is a pleasure to describe Matt’s many fine personal and professional qualities. He is intelligent, caring, responsible, energetic, multitalented and resourceful. He maintains a very high standard of professionalism and effectively combines his positive attitude, energy, humor, and knowledge to gain the highest level of respect from students, parents, administrators, and colleagues. Matt is extremely well organized, establishes an emotionally safe environment for his students, encourages his students to put forth their best effort, and is a superior role model. He is held in high regard at ACS and I greatly appreciated his many valuable contributions.
As an educator, Matt can be described as a “master teacher”. He maintains high, yet achievable academic standards. He implements meaningful educational practices, and is a successful motivator of students. He is an effective team member and works exceptionally well with others. In addition to his many talents as a teacher, Matt contributes to the school in the following ways: JV Academic Games advisor; JV soccer coach; debate and forensics coach; and a volunteer in a number of activities that add to the total school program. Matt is also recognized in the community for putting in countless volunteer hours to work with students by providing extra help. It is common knowledge that he is always available before and after school to give additional instructional assistance. He is also extremely active in contributing to a positive school environment by his words and actions. He is a joy to work with and a valuable member of the faculty.
It is truly a privilege to work with Matt. He is an excellent person and teacher. I give him my highest recommendation for your consideration. Based on his outstanding work, I would aggressively seek to employ Matt in the future. I am absolutely confident that he will make a positive and significant difference in your organization.
Sincerely,
Tim Hansen, Superintendent, American Community School of Abu Dhabi
